Traffic Controller (TC1) and Traffic Management Implementer (TMI1) Combined Course

The combined skill sets provide the skills and knowledge required for those responsible for traffic control and traffic management implementation on Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 environments (Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads) as described in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management.

Course Duration

Delivered over 3 days, with additional requirements post face-to-face delivery.

When training has been completed, students are required to complete 20 hours of work placement, two workplace-based observations and a Final Assessment.

Course Content

  • Control traffic with temporary traffic control devices
  • Communication techniques using equipment and systems
  • Identify and assess risks by implementing risk controls
  • Plan and prepare to implement traffic management plans
  • Set out and monitor traffic guidance scheme
  • Position, set up and program portable traffic control devices
  • Operating portable traffic control devices and using signs to control traffic
  • Shut down work activities and remove portable traffic control devices and signage

Course Outcome

On successful completion of all course requirements , students will be issued with:

  • A Statement of Attainment for each skill set; and
  • A temporary Workzone Traffic Management card issued by Workzone Training. The temporary card is valid for 2 months whilst awaiting the physical card which is issued by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).

The course comprises both theoretical and practical components with 2 days of classroom delivery and 1 day of simulated practical training. Students are required to attend each day.

 

TC1

  • Students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of practical work placement in a Temporary Traffic Management workplace and record evidence in the log book provided.
  • Work placement must be completed on declared Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 roads within at least six months of successfully completing the theoretical component, work placement can be arranged with Workzone Training.
  • It is recommended that students complete the TC work placement prior to undertaking the TMI observations however, they can be completed concurrently.

 

TMI1

  • Students are required to be observed on 2 separate occasions, on 2 separate set-ups by an appropriately qualified supervisor, gaining TMI experience. Practical experience requirements of implementing traffic management plans must be completed on declared Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 roads within at least six months of completing the theoretical component.

 

Final Assessment

  • On completion of TC work placement (Log Book) requirements and 2 TMI observations, students are required to complete a Final on-site assessment coordinated by Workzone Training and conducted by the Workzone Training Assessor.

All students must be 16 years or older and will be required to provide photographic identification upon arriving for their course (i.e. Australian Drivers Licence, Passport or Proof of Age Card). Students must also:

 

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Enclosed safety footwear, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt with hi-vis are required.
  • Other requirements will be confirmed at the time of booking.
  • Failure to wear correct PPE may prevent the student from completing the practical training and/or assessment.

 

Regulatory Requirements

  • Workzone Traffic Management card holders are required to be reaccredited every 3 years.

 

Consideration for future employment in the traffic industry:

While not required for the course, a valid driver’s licence may be necessary for certain jobs after completion. Prospective students should consider this when planning their careers and enrolling in this course.
